In 2006 the Mukuni pre-school had just 25 participants as the teachers had to be funded through fee paying. In 2007 Gardiff generously donated funds to build a new classroom, furniture and equipment and pay the salaries of three teaching staff. By 2008 The Butterfly Tree pre-school had over 200 children attending three classes throughout the day and the numbers kept increasing.

In 2010 thanks to further funds donated in memory of Sandra Challenger an additional classroom has been built to cater for the some 230 budding scholars. This year has also seen the opening of a second pre-school for The Butterfly Tree at Machenje Village.
