We have made\u00a0significant\u00a0strides in education and healthcare in the Kazungula and Livingstone Districts adding new schools and clinics in remote communities. Thousands of children are receiving a sound education and healthcare facilities have improved considerably.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10591\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG0526.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10591\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10591 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG0526-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"CIMG0526\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10591\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Restored classroom blocks &#8211; Nampuyani Primary School<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Our aim is to continue\u00a0this vital work, but first we have to address\u00a0two fundamental projects, <a title=\"Water\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/water\/\"><strong>Water<\/strong><\/a> and <a title=\"Food\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/food\/\"><strong>Food<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0to avoid a major crisis currently threatening\u00a0the lives and livelihoods of numerous people living in these districts.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10593\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG9720.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10593\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10593 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG9720-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"CIMG9720\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Water &#8211; the essence of life<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The rainy season in Zambia starts in November and ends in April. Some parts of Zambia have recorded good rains, sadly this is not the case in the Southern Province, where very little rain has fallen. Now the peak growing season is coming to an end and for many villages and schools there is no maize. Crops have failed to grow, resulting in a shortage of food, hunger is already apparent which will get worse over the coming months.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10596\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG8566.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10596\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10596 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG8566-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"CIMG8566\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10596\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maize crops destroyed due to lack of rain<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"line-height: 14.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; color: #333333;\"><strong>Water<\/strong>, so essential for all forms of life, is in short supply. Rivers and streams, normally\u00a0flowing at this time of year, are dry. Many\u00a0remote communities still have no access to safe water and have to rely on streams. We need to identify these areas and raise funds to provide additional bore holes.\u00a0Fortunately all the schools we work in now have bore holes to provide safe drinking <strong>water<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10598\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG0050.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10598\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10598 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG0050-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"CIMG0050\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10598\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dry stream &#8211; Nyawe Chiefdom<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"line-height: 14.25pt;\">If the crisis continues it is hoped that the Zambian government will send maize from the north of Zambia to the affected southern region. In the meantime The Butterfly Tree will provide further seeds and fertilizer for school <a title=\"School feeding programmes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/food\/mukuni-school-feeding-program\/\">feeding programmes<\/a>, to\u00a0enable them to grow beans, rape and cabbages using bore whole water for irrigation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10599\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG8619.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10599\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10599 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG8619-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"CIMG8619\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10599\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ground nuts provide a source of protein<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"line-height: 14.25pt;\">Our educational development projects with continue as normal. A 1&#215;2 classroom block and latrines will shortly be completed at <a title=\"Ndele Primary School\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/education\/ndele-basic-school\/\">N&#8217;dele Primary School<\/a>, thanks to a generous grant from the <a title=\"BFSS\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bfss.org.uk\/\">British and Foreign School Society<\/a>. This month work will commence on a 1&#215;3 classroom block, two teachers&#8217; houses and latrines at N&#8217;gandu School, using a substantial grant from the <a title=\"JOAC Community Works Project\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jerseyoverseasaid.org.je\/Projects\/2015-Projects\/Ngandu-Primary-School-Zambia\/\">Jersey Overseas Aid Commission<\/a>\u00a0as a\u00a0Community Works Project.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10600\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a title=\"Twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/butterflytree\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10600\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10600 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/DSC039161-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"DSC03916\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10600\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">N&#8217;dele pupils assist with classroom construction<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"line-height: 14.25pt;\">All of our work has had a big impact in these rural villages, but none more so than <strong>water<\/strong> projects.
