Imagine what it would be like if you had no fresh water to drink, no rain to irrigate the crops and no streams to wash your clothes in.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11422\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040876.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11422\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11422 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040876-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"P1040876\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11422\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dry River &#8211; Southern Province<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While some areas of the globe\u00a0are experiencing\u00a0excessive rain and\u00a0flooding caused by <b><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/El_Ni%C3%B1o\">El Ni\u00f1o<\/a><\/b>, many countries in Eastern and Southern Africa are suffering from drought. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/about\/where-we-work\/\">Zambia<\/a> is no exception. Though substantial rain has helped parts of the nation, areas between Zimba to\u00a0Livingstone,\u00a0in\u00a0Southern Province, have been hit for the second consecutive year. The Chiefdoms where we work are in this region.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11423\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG0049.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11423\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11423 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG0049-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"CIMG0049\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11423\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dry\u00a0Stream &#8211; Mukuni Chiefdom<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Reports are coming in of dry streams, failed crops and food shortages. Children are drinking from shallow wells. At River View School, which is close to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zambezi\">Zambezi River<\/a>, water is generally pumped from the river using an electric pump,\u00a0but when there is no electricity, water has to be drawn from the river. Last week, a fourteen year old boy had a narrow escape. As he was drawing the water a friend noticed a crocodile heading towards him and thankfully alerted the boy in time!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10596\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG8566.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10596\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10596 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG8566-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"CIMG8566\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10596\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Failed Maize Crop<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Over one third of Zambia\u2019s 15.5 million population do no have access to safe clean drinking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/water\/\">water<\/a> and 25% of all schools to not have a safe supply of water.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11424\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG98911.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11424\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11424 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG98911-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"CIMG9891\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11424\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shallow Wells used in Schools<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We have successfully installed a number of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/water\/bore-holes\/\">bore holes<\/a> and Indian hand pumps in schools, clinics and rural communities. This facility not only provides safe drinking water, but also a source of irrigation for school gardens to create sustainable <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/food\/mukuni-school-feeding-program\/\">feeding programmes<\/a>. As maize is rain dependent we have introduced\u00a0sorghum seeds for schools, the crop\u00a0requires less water, along with\u00a0vegetable seeds.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11428\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1050083.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11428\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11428 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1050083-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"P1050083\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11428\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Safe Drinking Water for Sinsimuku Pupils<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Our priority over the next few months will be to source funds to provide more remote schools and clinics with bore holes.
