The magnificent <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victoria_Falls\">Victoria Falls<\/a> is a <a href=\"http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/\">World Heritage<\/a> site and one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World. The area has an abundance of activities including game drives, elephant back safaris, river cruises and a cultural visit to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/about\/where-we-work\/mukuni-village\/\">Mukuni Village<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11460\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG5857.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11460\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11460 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG5857-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"CIMG5857\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11460\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Victoria Falls &#8211; one of the seven natural wonders of the world<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Little did I know that a visit to this renowned village would have such an impact on me and that\u00a0I would be running a charity to support orphans and vulnerable children. Nor did I imagine that I would have a global following of volunteers and supporters and be working in over one hundred\u00a0villages in remote areas of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/about\/where-we-work\/\">Zambia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11461\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CNV000191.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11461\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11461 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CNV000191-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"CNV00019\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11461\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">February 2007 &#8211; Mukuni Village Ceremony<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Three weeks later I returned\u00a0to Mukuni Village with my son younger son David. Inspired by three little girls, and\u00a0after\u00a0seeing so much need, The Butterfly Tree Charity was born. The following year we registered as an NGO in Zambia, which included the UK team and some remarkable local people who\u00a0are still with me.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11462\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CNV00030.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11462\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11462 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CNV00030-475x318.jpg\" alt=\"CNV00030\" width=\"475\" height=\"318\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11462\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">March 2006 &#8211; Angela, Esnat and Cynthia aged 3 and 4<\/p><\/div>\n<p>What started as a project to sponsor\u00a0a few orphans, followed by the construction of a high school, developed far beyond any of my expectations. My motto has always been<em> &#8216;I do not expect anything so everything is a bonus.&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0 The\u00a0bonus seems to get\u00a0bigger every year and the reward is being able to reach out to &#8216;<em>communities that need only the essentials in life &#8211; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/\">Water, Food, Health and Education<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11465\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG1649.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11465\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11465 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG1649-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"CIMG1649\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11465\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2008 &#8211; First bore hole installed\u00a0at Chise Village<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Raising funds and awareness is not always easy, especially when there are so many good causes to support. Sadly charity in the UK has become big business and vast amounts of money are needed for salaries and administration costs. From its concept I insisted that\u00a0The Butterfly Tree\u00a0would be\u00a0run entirely by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/about\/meet-the-team\/\">volunteers<\/a> in both the UK and Zambia. This has enabled all donations and grant aid to\u00a0go directly into the grass root projects &#8211; this principle is still in place.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11464\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG5640.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11464\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11464 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG5640-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"CIMG5640\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11464\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2009 &#8211; Mukun Secondary School 3 classroom block<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Our projects include\u00a0the development of some thirty schools and ten clinics. We have installed seventeen\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/water\/bore-holes\/\">bore holes<\/a>,\u00a0constructed over eighty latrines and built seventy community houses. We have worked tirelessly to help with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/health\/peer-education-for-hiv-and-aids-prevention\/\">prevention of HIV<\/a>, training school leavers in peer education. We have sponsored several hundred orphans and helped thousands more to gain a sound basic education. We introduced the first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/education\/special-needs-for-mukuni\/\">special education<\/a> units into Zambia and opened\u00a0the nation&#8217;s first\u00a0rural maternity clinic.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11463\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG1095.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11463\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11463 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG1095-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"CIMG1095\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some of the first orphans to be sponsored by the charity<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 2014 I was offered the opportunity to introduce a safe new <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/health\/malaria\/\">malaria prevention<\/a><\/strong> initiative into Zambia. Up until then we had only worked at District level. It was a gamble, but after months of working with the Ministry of Health and the National Malaria Control Centre the method was accepted and we were given the licence to import and distribute the products. We started distribution into remote village in November 2015,\u00a0and the reports\u00a0coming in are quite remarkable.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11466\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040848.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11466\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11466 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040848-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"P1040848\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11466\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2015 Mrs Maseka, member of the team, with volunteers at Chuunga Village<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Butterfly Tree is\u00a0the first charity in the world to use this superior form of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/malaria\/malaria-prevention-products\/\">malaria prevention<\/a><\/strong>. Our involvement has enabled the UK company to use our name and reports to introduce the products into other countries, not only to help the fight against malaria, but also Zika, Dengue Fever and Chikungunya.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11472\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040773.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11472\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11472 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040773-475x356.jpg\" alt=\"P1040773\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11472\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The home of these children has been coated to prevent malaria<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I am so grateful to all the people who have helped me to achieve so much, most especially my sons Mike and David (a trustee), and trustees Miranda de Freston and Wendy Calloway.
