Since April 1st I am delighted to say\u00a0that we\u00a0have received a substantial amount of funding to add more bore holes, to provide extra support for\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/malaria\/\">Malaria<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/health\/peer-education-for-hiv-and-aids-prevention\/\">HIV prevention<\/a>,<\/strong> and to construct new educational facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Using\u00a0donations from a private donor, Cayman Islands Rotary Club and Kampango we are about to install two bore holes at Singwamba Health Centre, which has a catchment of 7,500 and for River View School, attended by 1,100 pupils. At present both areas rely on river water, which is full of bacteria and in the case of River View, teeming with crocodiles.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11967\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040157.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11967\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11967 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040157-500x375.jpg\" alt=\"P1040157\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040157-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040157-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040157-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040157-1x1.jpg 1w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11967\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 1,100 pupils at River View School are to receive a new bore hole<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This year in Zambia there has been a serious outbreak in <strong>malaria<\/strong>, which is some areas has turned into an emergency. The environmental officers\u00a0believe it is due to the unseasonable heavy rain which fell in March, leaving\u00a0a considerable amount of stagnant water in rural areas. I am pleased\u00a0to say that the areas in Mukuni, where we applied the new intervention, have not been affected. This is an extract from a letter sent to us from the Ministry of Health:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;The application of the products in eight communities in the Mukuni Chiefdom has contributed to the reduction of malaria in Mukuni area. This is because the chemicals are very effective in fighting the malaria vector.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11968\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040874.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11968\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11968 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040874-500x375.jpg\" alt=\"P1040874\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040874-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040874-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040874-1x1.jpg 1w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11968\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the 1,000 plus households to receive protection from malaria<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In other areas Singwamba Health Centre recorded 3,245 cases of <strong>malaria<\/strong> and the tragic deaths of twelve\u00a0children aged between one and thirteen years. After putting out an\u00a0appeal on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/thebutterflytreecharity\/\">Facebook<\/a>, amazingly donors instantly responded and a considerable amount of money was raised. We have since applied the safe granules in mosquito breeding grounds, in the\u00a0worst affected areas, to prevent the larva\u00a0from developing into mosquito.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11970\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG9760.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11970\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11970 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG9760-500x375.jpg\" alt=\"CIMG9760\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG9760-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG9760-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG9760-1x1.jpg 1w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11970\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stagnant water &#8211; breeding ground for mosquito<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On the education front we received\u00a0substantial\u00a0funding from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jerseyoverseasaid.org.je\/\">Jersey Overseas Aid Commission<\/a> to add two 1&#215;3 classroom blocks and a solar system to N&#8217;gandu School. This is being done through their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jerseyoverseasaid.org.je\/Work-Projects\/2016-Projects\/\">Community Works Project<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0once again we will host volunteers from Jersey to\u00a0help with the construction. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arnewood.hants.sch.uk\/\">Arnewood School<\/a>\u00a0has raised funds for a\u00a0boarding shelter at Mukuni, a group of their students will shortly travel to Zambia to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/get-involved\/volunteering\/\">volunteer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11971\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040305-Large.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11971\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-11971 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040305-Large-500x375.jpg\" alt=\"P1040305 (Large)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040305-Large-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040305-Large-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040305-Large-1x1.jpg 1w, https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/P1040305-Large.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11971\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Further development for N&#8217;gandu Junior Secondary School<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sinsimuku Community School is currently being developed with the construction of two classrooms, latrines and a teacher&#8217;s house, thanks to a further donation from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.attraction-tickets-direct.co.uk\/\">Attraction Tickets Direct<\/a>. In addition a recent donation from a US volunteer will enable our young peer educators to carry out more workshops in <strong>HIV prevention<\/strong>.
