In recent months the media has focused on the outbreak of Zika<\/a>, which is threatening countries\u00a0in\u00a0the Americas, including the USA. Though no local mosquito-borne Zika virus disease cases have been reported in the States, lab tests have confirmed the\u00a0virus in travellers returning to the United States.<\/p>\n

With both the peak summer travel period and the forthcoming\u00a0Olympic Games<\/a>\u00a0approaching it\u00a0is important that all travellers\u00a0as well as\u00a0visitors to Rio\u00a0gain knowledge of the Zika virus. This can be obtained from the World Health Organisation<\/a>\u00a0or the Centre of Disease Control<\/a> websites, not only to protect your own health, but to avoid the spread of the virus to other parts of the world. With high poverty levels in African countries such as Zambia<\/a> it would be catastrophic if there was a new outbreak of the Zika virus.<\/p>\n

Whether it is Zika, Dengue Fever or Malaria<\/a><\/strong>, prevention methods are crucial. The Butterfly Tree has been supporting malaria prevention<\/a><\/strong> in Zambia since 2008.\u00a0Malaria<\/strong> is the biggest killer of man. This\u00a0year Zambia had an emergency in many\u00a0areas, districts with the highest prevalence\u00a0were Ndola, Kabwe and\u00a0Kazungula, where most of our work is carried out.<\/p>\n

CHILDREN NEED PROTECTION AGAINST MALARIA<\/p><\/div>\n

Two years ago The Butterfly Tree\u00a0introduced a safe and effective method of malaria prevention<\/a><\/strong>, which is proving to be highly successful according to reports from the Zambian Ministry of Health and the National Malaria Control Centre.\u00a0In areas where we applied the new products in November 2015, zero or very few cases have since been\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n

OVER 1,000 DWELLINGS WERE PAINTED WITH THE SAFE INSECTICIDAL COATING IN NOVEMBER 2015<\/p><\/div>\n

This new initiative is\u00a0attracting a great deal of interest from the Zambian government and private sector.\u00a0In the UK Saga Charitable Trust<\/a>, Medisave<\/a>, Inner Wheel<\/a> and Rotary Clubs<\/a> have given donations to buy both these products and mosquito nets.\u00a0Over the next few months we aim to paint the inside of\u00a0many more dwellings with the safe insecticidal coating and distribute nets. In addition granules will be placed\u00a0in ponds and stagnant water to prevent the larva from developing into mosquito.<\/p>\n
