The Butterfly Tree has supported a programme for children with <strong>special needs<\/strong> since 2008. Families on low or no income were unable to send their children to boarding schools in townships so they had to remain at home. The Zambian government welcomed our input after we build a <strong>special education<\/strong> unit at Mukuni Village. When I first met Joseph at the age of six he could not speak, had difficulty with balance and frequently fell over. He lived at home with his grandparents and was unable to attend school. The charity donated funds for Joseph to have physiotherapy &#8211; whithin a year the difference was remarkable, and in less than two years Joseph could run.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6243\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/6891840718_8f8a947a441.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6243\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6243 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/6891840718_8f8a947a441-500x375.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/6891840718_8f8a947a441.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/6891840718_8f8a947a441-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/6891840718_8f8a947a441-1x1.jpg 1w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6243\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joseph, at the ager of seven, has Cerebral Palsy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I then made a request to the special education teacher at Mukuni for Joseph to attend school just one day per week. He responded so well that the following week he attended every day. He had no use in his right arm. One day when I was visiting the class, Joseph started drawing on the blackboard, using his right hand. The stimulation from being at school really helped him progress. Now, at the age of 10, Joseph can string words together and actively engages with other children, even playing football!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12666\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/Joseph-Kakoma.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12666\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-12666 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/Joseph-Kakoma-500x375.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/Joseph-Kakoma-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/Joseph-Kakoma-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/Joseph-Kakoma-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/Joseph-Kakoma-1x1.jpg 1w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12666\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joseph, aged ten, loves football<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Following this success we built three more units for Katapazi, Simango and River View Schools in the Chiefdoms of Mukuni, Musokotwane and River View Schools, respectively. A recent donation from <a href=\"http:\/\/lasswade.mgfl.net\/\">Lasswade Primary School<\/a> will provide much needed materials for children with special needs.
