The Butterfly Tree<\/a> would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas.<\/p>\n

The words \u2018Do They Know It\u2019s Christmas<\/strong>\u2019 echo in my ears every time I here the music playing. If only there were more people like Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure the world would be a better place and the wealth would be more evenly distributed.<\/p>\n

Christmas, for me brings feelings of mixed emotions, I look forward to the time spent with family and friends. However Christmas shopping has never been the same since I founded the charity almost two years ago. I find it hard to cope with the \u2018glut\u2019 and the \u2018greed\u2019 of the western world during this festive season, everyone in state of frenzy; shops laden with merchandise; panic buying; people giving unwanted gifts; women stressed with the work load; couples arguing; children complaining that Santa didn\u2019t bring the latest technical gadget. Is it all necessary?<\/p>\n

So do they know it’s Christmas?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I asked one of the teachers at Mukuni Village<\/a> School what the community do at Christmas, she simply replied \u2018they go to church\u2019. When I asked her if they had a special meal she replied \u2018a chicken for the ones who can afford it, otherwise just the usual diet of maize and vegetables\u2019.<\/p>\n

Christmas is a time for giving and for many people it is a time to bring families together, to relax and have fun. Perhaps this Christmas you would like to include giving an education to an orphan, building a home for a widow with children, funding a bore hole for a village relying on polluted river water, a small donation to provide healthcare for people suffering from HIV\/AIDS or malaria or simply buy one of our charity calendars.<\/p>\n
