Despite all the set backs\u00a0that\u00a0arise when\u00a0working in a country as poor as Zambia<\/a>, the good news outweighs the bad. The development at Katapazi Village is in the final stages of completion. Thanks to\u00a0an extremely\u00a0generous grant aid from Jersey Overseas\u00a0Aid Commission<\/a>, this project\u00a0undertaken by The Butterfly Tree to improve the health and education facilities for Katapazi,\u00a0is almost finished. To\u00a0advance the project a bore hole funded by Just a Drop<\/a> and W Foundation<\/a> has been installed\u00a0for the school, this had an additional use\u00a0making the building of the classroom much easier.<\/p>\n

Katapazi a remote community with a polulation\u00a0in excess of 5000\u00a0lies\u00a0over 30 miles\u00a0from Livingstone. It is accessible only by tracks and during the rainy season these become impassable.\u00a0Part of the Mukuni\u00a0Chiefdom<\/a>\u00a0Katapazi has a basic school and clinic, both were badly in need of restoration and advancement. The school has 500 pupils and most of them had to drop out after grade seven as the distance to the next school was too great. They can now add two more grades for the older children and\u00a0benefit from having a spacious 1×3 classroom block and additional pit-latrine toilets.<\/p>\n

For the men of Katapazi the facilities at the clinic were non-existent, the nearest\u00a0health centre\u00a0demanded a walk of over 25 miles resulting in uneccessary deaths. Besides restorating the existing clinic we have\u00a0built a seperate male ward and installed solar panels to provide lightning for the clinic to operate at night. In addition we have purchased a paraffin fridge for the medical needs which include malaria and HIV\/AIDS\u00a0<\/a>medication. We would like to thank the people of Jersey for this invaluable assistance, where the men can be treated and lives can be saved.<\/p>\n

There are many more\u00a0villages that have no schools or\u00a0health centres. The Butterfly Tree<\/a> aims to\u00a0offer\u00a0others the same opportunity as Katapazi, which has enabled\u00a0these vulnerable children to receive a sound education and given access to\u00a0improved health facilities\u00a0for\u00a0an\u00a0entire community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
