I was\u00a0distressed to learn yesterday that out of 50 pupils who had past grade 9 to attend the new high school, only 20 had been able to\u00a0afford to pay for the fees and uniform.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2007 when I was driving through Livingstone, the teacher from\u00a0<a title=\"Mukuni\" href=\"\/pages\/our-work\/mukuni\/\" target=\"_self\">Mukuni<\/a> who was accompanying me, asked me to pull over after she spotted a pupil from\u00a0her class.\u00a0When she asked\u00a0Victor Simango\u00a0why he was not at school, he bowed his head\u00a0and simply replied &#8216;I cannot&#8217;. I also\u00a0questioned\u00a0him and found that he had no father and a mother who could no longer afford to educate him. I asked him if he liked school and that if he got the chance of a sponsorship would be attend. The answer was yes to both questions.\u00a0 I suggested he meet me at the Head Teacher&#8217;s office at 9am the following morning, he was early!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"imageframe imgalignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/2355518692_41bf0e6741.jpg\" alt=\"Sponsored orphan\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><br \/>\nSponsored orphan: <a title=\"Sponsored Orphan Victor Simango\" rel=\"bookmark\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/2008\/188\/\">Victor Simango <\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is heartbreaking to see these Zambian children who&#8217;s education is the most important part of their life, having to drop out of school as one or\u00a0both of their parents have died. Next week grade\u00a09\u00a0pupils are due to sit their exams; twenty would have been unable to\u00a0take them until The Butterfly Tree intervened; their grandparents or guardians could not find the \u00a34.50 to pay for the examination fees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Orphan sponsorships<\/strong> are \u00a385 a year and will cover the cost of school and exam fees, books, uniform, shoes and school bag. Our aim is to get the older children back into school as quickly as possible so that they do not miss any more valuable lessons.<\/p>\n<p>Please consider\u00a0sponsoring an orphan and make a difference to someone&#8217;s life!
