The Butterfly Tree is committed to continue helping the fight to reduce the burden of malaria, the biggest killer of man. Although the number of deaths have declined over the last decade 75% of deaths caused by malaria are children under the age of five in sub-Sahara Africa. <a title=\"Zambia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/about\/where-we-work\/\">Zambia<\/a> is no exception.<\/p>\n<p><em>Malaria disease caused by P. falciparum may r<\/em><em>esult in death within hours or a few days of infection especially in those with a low immunity such as children, pregnant women, people with AIDS and travelers with little or no malaria. It can also result in the miscarriage of pregnant women, low birth-weight infants, developmental disabilities and other complications.<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4468\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4468\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4468 \" title=\"World Malaria Day\" alt=\"World Malaria Day\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/5653131496_c6dc132af0-475x356.jpg\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4468\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">World Malaria Day: help prevent Paddington from contracting malaria<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Until a cure is found prevention is the only way to\u00a0avert this dehabilatating disease, which is the leading cause of school absenteeism. Providing mosquito nets, malaria tests and educational workshops effectively reduces the number of new cases. <a title=\"Saga Charitable Trust\" href=\"http:\/\/www.saga.co.uk\/saga-charitable-trust\/projects\/zambia\/mukuni-clinic\/\">Saga Charitable Trust<\/a> donates annually to our <a title=\"malaria prevention\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/health\/malaria\/\">malaria prevention<\/a> program, enabling us to provide\u00a0this vital aid.\u00a0The Zambian government&#8217;s aim is to distribute mosquito nets\u00a0every child under five as well as\u00a0pregnant women. Sadly\u00a0the supplies are insufficient and there is a massive shortfall. <a title=\"UCL GDI\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uclugdi.com\/\">UCL GDI<\/a>\u00a0members\u00a0recently\u00a0hel fund-raising events\u00a0during One World Week and donated the\u00a0money to our program.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0px;\" alt=\"World Malaria Day\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldmalariaday.org\/images\/world_malaria_day_en.gif\" usemap=\"#Map\" width=\"179\" height=\"112\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just \u00a35 ($8) will buy a mosquito net and could <strong>save a child&#8217;s life.<\/strong> The Butterfly Tree has produced a charity CD, called <a title=\"Change for the Better\" href=\"http:\/\/changeforthebetter.bandcamp.com\/\">&#8216;Change for the Better&#8217; <\/a>\u00a0this can be downloaded for \u00a32 or \u00a33 for a CD &#8211; all proceeds go to the malaria prevention program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4469\" title=\"Change for the Better\" alt=\"Change for the Better\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/4512611284_649e066288-475x473.jpg\" width=\"475\" height=\"473\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today is World Malaria Day.
