This past month has\u00a0seen a boost in funds\u00a0for The Butterfly Tree\u00a0thanks to the\u00a0many volunteers and fundraisers helping our cause.\u00a0On September 15th Mike Kaye, Nigel Birch, Jake Wilson-Gunn and James Blackburn arrived at Brands Hatch Circuit to participate in CyclothonUK<\/a>. The charity won a free place for a team of four. We are very grateful to the organisers, the participants\u00a0and our main sponsors, CRB Solutions<\/a>,\u00a0Academy Leasing<\/a>, Geddess Associates and Serenity Finance<\/a> for making this\u00a0happen.<\/p>\n

The challenge started at 7.30am and finished twelve hours later at 7.30pm. The undulating hills proved to be too much for some, especially the event organisor, Victor Umbugu, a\u00a0former England rugby\u00a0prop.\u00a0Despite the gruelling task\u00a0our amazing team persevered and earned a well-deserved sixth place out of thirty teams.\u00a0Their efforts have\u00a0raised over \u00a32200 for our projects\u00a0in Zambia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During my recent trip to Zambia I was fortunate to be working with several dedicated volunteers. Mutsa Marau<\/a>, who\u00a0is working\u00a0with pupils\u00a0in the Mukuni\u00a0Chiefdom, has\u00a0initiated a\u00a0peer education project\u00a0in HIV\/AIDS prevention<\/a>. Petteri Allpi, a former UCL student from Finland, set himself tasks\u00a0to improve\u00a0the Maths and English standards in the schools and documenting The Butterfly Tree projects.\u00a0A third volunteering trip to\u00a0Mukuni Village<\/a>\u00a0for Margaret Bax and Casey Short, sees the progression of the goat’s milk project to support the under-fives’ feeding<\/a> programme.<\/p>\n

Hannah Lainton and Claire Richardson spent a month teaching business skills to women’s groups in Mukuni<\/a> and also taking lessons for children at the school. James Ashley raised funds to donate\u00a0and assist in the construction of a house for a widow with orphans in addition to working with young children. The mutual benefit of\u00a0having volunteers\u00a0has\u00a0a lasting\u00a0impact on the community and creates a life-changing experience for the partaker.
