Over <strong>30 million<\/strong> people have died from AIDS related causes. An estimated <strong>33 million<\/strong> are living with HIV. <strong>2.9 million<\/strong> of these are children. Around <strong>68%<\/strong> of from sub-Sahara Africa. <a title=\"Zambia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/about\/where-we-work\/why-zambia\/\">Zambia<\/a> has the seventh highest prevalence in the world. Today gives the opportunity to unite in the fight against HIV and to commemorate the people who have died from this devastating disease.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"World AIDS Day - young Mukuni girl free of HIV\" alt=\"World AIDS Day - young Mukuni girl free of HIV\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/6288454250_dfd051f431-475x356.jpg\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">World AIDS Day &#8211; young Mukuni girl free of HIV<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For the past five years The Butterfly Tree\u00a0funds several HIV projects in the <a title=\"Mukuni Chiefdom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/about\/where-we-work\/\">Mukuni\u00a0Chiefdom<\/a> of Zambia. These include <a title=\"Orphan sponsorship \" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/get-involved\/orphan-sponsorship\/\">orphan sponsorship<\/a>,\u00a0educational workshops and voluntary testing, treatment for\u00a0the sick and an <a title=\"Under five's feeding program\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/food\/under-fives-feeding-program\/\">under-fives&#8217; feeding programme<\/a> to prevent the transmission\u00a0of HIV from mother to child.\u00a0Formula is provided to replace breast milk in HIV positive mothers. Since its conception in 2007 every infant accepted on our program has been tested negative. Due to high costs of powdered milk we have initiated a goats&#8217; milk project to supplement the programme, with the aim of making it sustainable.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5493\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5493\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5493 \" title=\"Mutsa Marau with a Mukuni baby\" alt=\"Mutsa Marau with a Mukuni baby\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/6419808423_dd56e6960d-475x356.jpg\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5493\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mutsa Marau with a Mukuni baby<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This year we have intoduced a new project thanks to <a title=\"Meet Mutsa\" href=\"http:\/\/meetmutsa.tumblr.com\/\">Mutsa Marau<\/a>, a young volunteer from London, who at our own cost, has been working in <a title=\"Mukuni Village\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/about\/where-we-work\/mukuni-village\/\">Mukuni Village<\/a> for the past three months. Her HIV prevention programme to train peer educators amongst the school pupils has been a huge success. Having spent her time training these young educators, assisted by Margaret Mulenga,\u00a0they are now\u00a0targeting outreach villages to &#8216;spread the word&#8217;. Today to mark the occassion\u00a015 members, between the ages of 14 and 20 years, will be\u00a0performing at the Chief &#8216;s Palace\u00a0as part of Mukuni Villages&#8217; activities to mark World\u00a0AIDS Day. The groups performance will include poetry reading along with the presentation of art pieces explaining how every one of them can help the prevalance of HIV in their community get to zero.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5494\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5494\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5494 \" title=\"Peer educators in HIV prevention \" alt=\"Peer educators in HIV prevention \" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/321100_280909041951742_148499601859354_816483_575186104_n1-475x316.jpg\" width=\"475\" height=\"316\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5494\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peer educators in HIV prevention including sponsored orphans<\/p><\/div>\n<p>From the 5th &#8211; 9th December all donations to The Butterfly Tree have a chance to be doubled if made through our partners, the Big Give, during their <a title=\"The Big Give Christmas Challenge\" href=\"http:\/\/content.thebiggive.org.uk\/pledgers-page-2\/\">Christmas Challenge<\/a> week.
