Education is the <strong>key<\/strong> <strong>factor<\/strong> to fight the HIV and AIDS pandemic in Zambia. A quote from <a title=\"Avert\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/2008\/feeding-time-at-mukuni\/\">Avert<\/a>, <em>&#8216;as of 2005, although almost all adult Zambians know that HIV and AIDS exists, still 8.8% of the population do not know that it can be avoided. Over 25% of adults think that mosquitos can transmit HIV, 22% think they can be infected by withchraft; and 15% believe that sharing a meal with an infected person puts them at risk. The level of understanding is lower in towns, and women are less knowledgeable than men&#8217;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"The Butterfly Tree charity\" href=\"\/pages\/about\/\" target=\"_self\">The Butterfly Tree charity<\/a> aims to built more pre-schools in Zambia; almost half of the population is between 5 and 14 years old,\u00a0very few\u00a0have HIV\u00a0and by\u00a0educating these young Zambians at an early age the <a title=\"HIV\/AIDS\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/2008\/world-aids-day-2\/\">HIV and AIDS<\/a> statistics can be reduced. There is little else\u00a0to occupy\u00a0these children, living in poor rural communites,\u00a0unless they can go to school.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"imageframe\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/2670037221_c44179dc331.jpg\" alt=\"Mukuni pre school\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Mukuni village pre school children<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a title=\"Mukuni Village\" href=\"\/pages\/mukuni-village\/\" target=\"_self\">Mukuni Village<\/a>\u00a0pre-school built by The Butterfly Tree, thanks to a generous donation by <a title=\"Gardiff\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gardiff.com\/\">Gardiff<\/a>, who are also supporting two teachers and a classroom helper, is a huge success. Over 200 children attend three classes throughout the day, learning English and Maths skills, preparing them for the basic school at the age of five.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"imageframe\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/2670073823_29d293023e1.jpg\" alt=\"Children at Ngandu\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Children at <a title=\"Ngandu School\" href=\"\/pages\/2007\/ngandu-school\" target=\"_self\">Ngandu School<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>We need\u00a0donors to sponsor more pre-schools for <a title=\"Ngandu School\" href=\"\/pages\/2007\/ngandu-school\" target=\"_self\">Ngandu School<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/\">Kamwi <\/a>and other villages supported by The Butterfly Tree. At\u00a0Mukuni and\u00a0many schools in Livingstone\u00a0we are using educational DVDS, provided by TME, to teach <strong>HIV and AIDS<\/strong> awareness, prevention\u00a0and voluntary testing.
