{"id":9475,"date":"2013-12-01T12:23:36","date_gmt":"2013-12-01T12:23:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/?p=9475"},"modified":"2013-12-01T14:24:01","modified_gmt":"2013-12-01T14:24:01","slug":"world-aids-day-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/2013\/world-aids-day-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"WORLD AIDS DAY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks World AIDS Day &#8211; the following statistics can be found on The <a title=\"WHO\" href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/campaigns\/aids-day\/2013\/en\/index.html\">World Health Organisation<\/a> website:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #464646;\"><strong>35.3 million <\/strong>people living with HIV in 2012<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #464646;\"><strong>2.1 million adolescents were living with HIV in 2012<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #464646;\"><strong>9.7 million people in low- and middle-income countries were receiving antiretroviral therapy<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One thing I have learnt in the seven years I have been running The Butterfly Tree is that no lasting change can be made unless <a title=\"HIV Prevention\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/health\/hiv-aids-prevention\/\">HIV Prevention<\/a> is included in our work. Zambia alone has 710,000 orphans, with Mukuni Village along with Livingstone, having the fourth highest statistics in the nation. A staggering 27% of the population are infected with\u00a0<a title=\"HIV - WHO\" href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/topics\/hiv_aids\/en\/\">HIV<\/a>. Although we have made a great deal of improvement in the provision of water, education, malaria prevention and maternity care much more needs to be done to reduce new infections of HIV.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9491\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG9228.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9491\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9491\" alt=\"CIMG9228\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG9228-475x356.jpg\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9491\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">World AIDS Day &#8211; one of the hundreds of orphans in the Mukuni Chiefdom<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mutsa Marau, our own HIV Prevention Coordinator, is currently in Zambia working with groups of school children. Her invaluable work through her &#8216;<a title=\"Meet Mutsa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/meetmutsa\">Catch me I&#8217;m a Butterfly<\/a>&#8216; project teaches <a title=\"HIV Prevetion though peer education\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/health\/peer-education-for-hiv-and-aids-prevention\/\">HIV prevention<\/a>\u00a0through Peer Education and is proving to be a great success. Gaining the trust of the children Mutsa trained her first group in 2011 who are now assisting her to &#8216;spread the word&#8217;.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9496\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG9766.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9496\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9496\" alt=\"CIMG9766\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG9766-475x356.jpg\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9496\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">HIV Prevention through Peer Education<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In addition to Mukuni, Mutsa is targeting N&#8217;gandu Basic School and is delighted to have an\u00a0increase in the uptake from the young people, who want to learn and know how to live healthy HIV free lives. To read more about Mutsa&#8217;s project click on this\u00a0<a title=\"Meet Mutsa\" href=\"http:\/\/meetmutsa.tumblr.com\/\">link<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9509\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/IMG_5471.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9509\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9509\" alt=\"IMG_5471\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/IMG_5471-475x266.jpg\" width=\"475\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9509\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Natasha, sponsored orphan, assisting Mutsa at N&#8217;gandu Basic School<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Other HIV projects supported by The Butterfly Tree include <a title=\"orphan sponsorship\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/get-involved\/orphan-sponsorship\/\">orphan sponsorship<\/a>, funding <a title=\"HIV Education\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/health\/hiv-and-aids-education\/\">HIV Education<\/a> workshops to invite people for voluntary testing, to reduce the stigma and counselling.
