{"id":9993,"date":"2014-07-02T08:18:30","date_gmt":"2014-07-02T08:18:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/?p=9993"},"modified":"2014-07-02T10:33:16","modified_gmt":"2014-07-02T10:33:16","slug":"educating-orphans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/2014\/educating-orphans\/","title":{"rendered":"Educating Orphans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Zambia a high percentage of children are orphans as a result of the\u00a0<a title=\"HIV and AIDS pandemic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/health\/hiv-aids-prevention\/\">HIV and AIDS<\/a>\u00a0pandemic.\u00a0Since 2006 The Butterfly Tree has offered support to orphans and vulnerable children in twenty five schools in the Southern Province.\u00a0Five of these schools were built from scratch, thanks to generous funding from the <a title=\"JOAC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jerseyoverseasaid.org.je\/\">Jersey Overseas Aid Commission<\/a>, others have been expanded, some now have pre-schools and four schools have new special education units.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6103\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/NEW-SCHOOL-AT-MATENGU.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6103\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6103\" alt=\"NEW SCHOOL AT MATENGU\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/NEW-SCHOOL-AT-MATENGU-475x356.jpg\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6103\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NEW SCHOOL AT MATENGU<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The hardships these rural children have to endure on a daily basis are numerous &#8211; lack of safe drinking water and shortage of food, hours of walking to school in the baking sun, the risk of contracting <a title=\"Malaria\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/malaria\/\">malaria<\/a> and HIV, and no clinic within a thirty mile radius. How do they cope? They live for each day and hope for a better future. <a title=\"Education\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/education\/\">Education<\/a> is the key to overcoming poverty and its related issues. By advancing these rural schools The Butterfly Tree has given hope to thousands of orphaned and vulnerable children.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9996\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG6731.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9996\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9996 \" alt=\"CIMG6731\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG6731-475x356.jpg\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9996\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">OLD SCHOOL AT MATENGU<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the past twelve months we have completed education projects in Mukuni, Musokotwane and Nyawe Chiefdoms. Simango, River View and Katapazi schools have each gained a special education unit. Muchimbale, Chuunga and soon to be completed Nampuyani, have all had extra classrooms, teacher\u2019s house and latrines, and three more schools have <a title=\"Boreholes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/water\/\">boreholes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9997\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG9063.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9997\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9997\" alt=\"CIMG9063\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/wp-content\/images\/CIMG9063-475x356.jpg\" width=\"475\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9997\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SAFE DRINKING WATER FOR OVER 700 PUPILS AT KAUWE BASIC SCHOOL<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Many parents of these rural children are illiterate. Education not only provides an opportunity to seek employment, it teaches children about the dangers of <a title=\"HIV Prevention through Peer Education\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/health\/peer-education-for-hiv-and-aids-prevention\/\">HIV<\/a> and <a title=\"Malaria Prevention\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebutterflytree.org.uk\/pages\/our-work\/health\/malaria\/\">malaria prevention<\/a>. A substantial number of orphans, who we started sponsoring back in 2006, are currently receiving further education or engaged in work. They now have a purpose in life and a chance to help their families and communities. The Butterfly Tree is committed to continuing this vital support, most especially for orphans.
