Education is the Key
Without education these children have no hope of improving their situation. In addition to the academic subjects education teaches them about the dangers of HIV and AIDS and how to avoid it, how to remove the stigma of HIV and how to live with HIV if you have the misfortune of being born with it.
Knowing your status, living positively and taking the medication can give a child with HIV the chance to lead a normal life, all of this can be achieved through education. Attending school, mixing with friends and completing high school gives an opportunity for these vulnerable children to have a future. Zambia is an up and coming tourist destination. We work close to Livingstone, the tourism capitol of the nation, therefore school leavers will have an opportunity to apply for a career.
Our orphan sponsorship programme started in 2006 and from 2012 we funded orphans and vulnerable young people to partake in further education courses. Among those courses are bio-medicine, nursing, accountancy, teaching, agriculture, engineering, journalism, forward and clearing, hotel management and catering, building and plumping. One young man from Mukuni was sponsored to become a pilot.
Every year we aim to add more orphans and vulnerable children to the programme. Many grade 10 pupils, having sat grade nine in view of attaining a high school place, fail to find funds for their educational needs.
We are sponsoring orphans from the following schools: Mukuni, N’gandu, Kamwi, Ndele, Siamasimbi, Chaba, Ndele, Chuunga, Mahalululu, Riverview, Musokotwane, Senkobo, Lumbo and Nguba schools. Many of these pupils walk miles each way, keen to be educated and with the hope of having a better future.

How to sponsor an orphan
To sponsor an orphan please email jane@thebutterflytree.org.uk. We will respond with all the information and on how to make a payment on line, via cheque or by standing order.
Cost: £110 (EUR130) per annum or £10 per month for one child to be educated. For US donors the cost is $160, Australia AUD $230. The amount will pay for all their educational needs, including books, uniform, school shoes and bag. For orphans in lower grades – any remaining funds are held in the school account for extras or emergencies that may incur throughout the year.

We are also registered with PayPal Giving Fund, which is 100% free and takes Gift Aid.
